Bloc prepares Emir Abdelkader allegiance commemoration in Mascara with guests from Elkader, USA

On 31 October 2024, the president of the Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc Institution, Mr Djelloul Chetouane, wrote to the Wali of Mascara requesting that he host and look after the Institution’s guests for the commemoration of the allegiance (moubayaa) to Emir Abdelkader on 27 November 2024: the guests of honour from Clayton, Iowa, in the United States, Mr Josh Pop, mayor of Elkader, and Ms Kathy Grams, president of the Abd el-Kader foundation (A.E.P.).
This national event commemorates the allegiance pledged to Emir Abdelkader on 27 November 1832, a historic moment that helped unite Algerians in resistance to French colonialism. Organised in Mascara wilaya in coordination with the “Civil Society Network against Global Neo-colonial Thought”, it will be devoted to the history of national resistance under Emir Abdelkader, led by researchers and history professors, followed by a debate on the Emir’s role in tolerance between communities and his symbolism in the United States.
Programme:
- 26 November: welcome of the guests and dinner;
- 27 November: morning presentations, break, further presentations and open debate; evening tour of Emir Abdelkader’s historic sites, followed by a closing dinner.
