Bloc rejects latest US position on Western Sahara and reaffirms support for the Polisario Front

Official statement of the Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc Institution on the US administration’s position on Western Sahara — Algiers, 10 April 2025
The Hisn Al-Mateen Bloc Institution has followed with grave concern the statement issued by the US State Department after the meeting on 8 April 2025 between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The statement shows clear bias towards the Kingdom of Morocco’s expansionist claims by adopting the position that “Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal is the only basis for resolving the dispute”, a flagrant breach of international legality, of UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions and of international law, which classifies Western Sahara as an unfinished case of decolonisation.
Expressing its full and unconditional support for the struggle of the brotherly Sahrawi people and its steadfast backing for the Polisario Front as the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, the Institution states the following:
- our total rejection of this latest US position, which does not serve peace and undermines Washington’s neutrality as a supposed mediator in the UN process aimed at a lasting, just solution based on the right to self-determination;
- our appreciation of the sovereign statement issued by the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 9 April 2025, sound in law and politics, reminding the US administration of the more balanced positions of previous administrations;
- a call on the international community, especially the African Union and the United Nations, to shoulder their legal and historic responsibilities towards the Sahrawi people and to resist any attempt to impose a fait accompli or legitimise the occupation;
- our conviction that peace in the region cannot be achieved without respecting the Sahrawi people’s will to choose their future freely, free from pressure or bargaining;
- a call on civil organisations, Arab and African elites and free people everywhere to step up popular, diplomatic and media support for the cause of Western Sahara, one of the continent’s oldest liberation causes.
In conclusion, the Institution, led by its president Mr Djelloul Chetouane, reaffirms its commitment to supporting the just Sahrawi cause by all peaceful means and to opening channels of support and coordination with the Polisario Front and the heroic Sahrawi people.
Long live a free and independent Western Sahara; eternal glory to the martyrs.
