The Sahel under siege… rising threats and shattered balances!

Sunday 13 July 2025 – Africa News daily
The African Sahel has undergone unprecedented security shifts in the first half of 2025, with a dangerous escalation of jihadist violence and a multiplication of fronts, amid the withdrawal of foreign forces and the weakness of central states.
- 734 terrorist attacks.
- 1,171 civilian victims.
- Armed organisations vying for influence in a political and security vacuum.
In my analysis published on page 16 of today's issue, I addressed:
- the failure of the coup regimes to build the state;
- Algeria's pivotal role in restoring balance and containing chaos;
- the return of the “Islamic State” to the scene through fresh bloodshed;
- the danger of regional collapse if the Sahel states are left to face their fate alone.
